For a long time I thought my deodorant choices were limited to:

  • Aluminum-based antiperspirants
  • Expensive “natural” deodorants
  • Or just plain smelling bad

But there’s a fourth option:

  • Make your own effective, inexpensive natural deodorant that actually works.

Hallelujah!

Homemade deodorant for sensitive skin

I started making deodorant years ago and initially loved a baking soda–based recipe. It worked well—until it began to irritate my skin and caused a painful rash. Baking soda can be harsh for sensitive underarms, so I went searching for alternatives.

It turns out there is a reliable homemade deodorant without baking soda that still keeps odor at bay.

Why avoid antiperspirants?

In short: antiperspirants often contain aluminum and synthetic ingredients that may pose health concerns. Consider these points:

  • Aluminum compounds are debated for potential links to health issues; some studies suggest hormone disruption and other risks.
  • Antiperspirants block sweat glands. Sweating is a natural way our body eliminates heat and some toxins.
  • Commercial antiperspirants can include parabens and synthetic fragrances, which are associated with hormonal disruption and irritation for sensitive people.
  • Synthetic fragrances can trigger respiratory irritation and other health concerns in sensitive individuals.

Those are valid reasons to consider alternatives if you prefer fewer synthetic chemicals in your personal care routine.

Downsides to natural deodorants

Natural deodorants can come with drawbacks—chiefly, they sometimes don’t control odor as reliably as conventional products. Common challenges include:

  • High cost for effective natural options sold commercially.
  • Some formulations fail to control odor for long periods.
  • Certain ingredients can still irritate sensitive skin.

All you need is one surprising ingredient

You can add essential oils if you like, but this single-ingredient approach works on its own. The product costs under $3 and, with daily use, a bottle lasts my partner and me two to three months.

It’s gentle, non-toxic, and strong enough to last about 24 hours for me. The ingredient might surprise you—drum roll…

Milk of magnesia.

Yes—the same milk of magnesia often used as a laxative. Applied topically it has no laxative effect. I’ve used it for months with great results as a deodorant for sensitive skin.

Which milk of magnesia to use

Choose a product that contains only magnesium hydroxide and purified water—no flavoring or sugar. Added sugars or flavorings aren’t suitable for application on skin, especially in warm, damp areas.

Many pharmacies carry plain milk of magnesia, and it’s inexpensive.

Why milk of magnesia works

Milk of magnesia is magnesium hydroxide, an alkaline compound that helps neutralize odor-causing bacteria on the skin’s surface. It doesn’t stop sweating (which is healthy), but it reduces the bacteria responsible for the odor.

How to apply it

Because it’s a liquid, you have a few simple application options:

  1. Transfer it to a spray bottle and spray 2–3 squirts directly on clean underarms. This worked well initially, though spray nozzles can clog if not maintained.
  2. Use a reusable squeeze bottle and pour a small amount onto your fingers, then rub it into each underarm. This is a tidy, effective method.
  3. Pour into a deodorant roller bottle for a mess-free, controlled application. I plan to try this for convenience.

What you need:

  • Milk of magnesia (plain, magnesium hydroxide and purified water only)
  • Optional: a container such as a spray bottle, squeeze bottle, or deodorant roller for application

  • Lavender — gentle and soothing
  • Tea tree — antibacterial
  • Rosemary — antibacterial and fresh-smelling

Directions:

  • Pour milk of magnesia into your chosen container.
  • If using, add essential oils, close the lid, and shake well.
  • Shake before each use, as milk of magnesia can separate naturally.
  • Apply a light layer to clean underarms. Allow it to dry slightly before dressing.

Enjoy not smelling bad or breaking out in a rash—gentle, effective odor control for sensitive skin.
