Homemade Foaming Hand Soap Recipe: DIY Natural Foaming Soap

Did you know you can make your own homemade foaming hand soap? It’s simple, economical, and perfect for busy households.

At first I didn’t think foaming hand soap mattered, but once kids entered the picture I changed my mind. Kids tend to over-pump liquid soap, and a foaming dispenser delivers mostly air with just enough cleanser—so you get less waste and smoother hand washing.

I started with a foaming dispenser because I liked the convenience and scent of a brand I tried, but soon discovered it’s far cheaper to refill the pump with liquid Castile soap or a homemade liquid soap, then add a few drops of essential oils like lemon or a germ-fighting blend. The result smells great and keeps hands clean without the cost of pre-made foaming refills.

This foaming soap lives by the kids’ sink and is our everyday hand soap. Elsewhere in the house we use bar soap—often goat milk bars scented with rosemary-mint, oatmeal-lavender, or occasional coffee scrub bars—so the foaming dispenser has its dedicated place where it’s most useful.

If you prefer a different scent than the blends I mention, try any antimicrobial essential oil or a favorite blend. Essential oils provide fragrance and can add antimicrobial properties, making your homemade foaming soap both pleasant and effective.

This foaming hand soap is quick to make and uses simple ingredients you likely already have on hand.

Easy Homemade Foaming Hand Soap Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Foaming soap pump (clean and empty)
  • Liquid Castile soap or homemade liquid hand soap
  • Distilled water
  • Vitamin E oil or fractionated coconut oil (small amount)
  • Your preferred essential oils (optional for scent and extra cleansing properties)

Instructions:

  1. Pour 2 tablespoons of liquid Castile soap or homemade liquid soap into the empty foaming soap container.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of vitamin E oil or fractionated coconut oil; this helps moisturize the skin and preserves the blend.
  3. Add 12–15 drops total of essential oils. A balanced option is 7 drops of a protective blend and 7 drops of lemon, but choose any combination you like.
  4. Fill the rest of the container with distilled water, leaving a little air space for foaming action.
  5. Secure the pump top and gently invert or shake the bottle a few times to mix—avoid vigorous shaking that creates foam inside the container.
  6. Prime the pump by pressing it a few times until foam appears. Refill and enjoy as needed.

Tips: use distilled water to reduce contamination and extend shelf life; keep the dispenser clean and replace the mixture every few weeks if you don’t add a preservative; adjust essential oil amounts to suit family preferences. With this small effort you’ll save money, reduce waste, and have a pleasant, effective foaming hand soap at your sink.
