What We Love About These Paleo Sweet Bacon-Wrapped Smokies

With just four ingredients and about 30 minutes from start to finish, these smokies make an easy, crowd-pleasing appetizer. The combination of maple and coconut sugar creates a caramelized, crispy finish that balances the smoky bacon and savory sausage. You can bake them in the oven or use an air fryer for the same great result.

Wrapping each little sausage takes a bit of hands-on time, but it’s simple and worth it. A quick brush of maple syrup before a sprinkle of coconut sugar creates that sweet, crunchy coating everyone reaches for.

Ingredients

  • Smokie cocktail sausages – Use a Whole30-compliant or unsweetened smoked cocktail sausage to keep this Paleo, or any small sausage you prefer.
  • Bacon – Choose a bacon without added sugars or unwanted additives for a Paleo-friendly version. Low-sodium, sugar-free options work well.
  • Maple syrup – Use 100% pure maple syrup for authentic flavor. For a keto alternative, use a sugar-free maple-style syrup.
  • Coconut sugar – A great Paleo-friendly substitute for brown sugar. For keto, swap with a granular monkfruit sweetener.
  • Toothpicks – To secure the bacon around the smokies while they cook.

Ingredients

  • 1 14 oz package smoked cocktail sausages
  • 1/2 pound bacon
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar divided
  • toothpicks

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (218°C). To help excess bacon fat drain, place a cooling rack on a baking sheet or use a broiling pan so the smokies can crisp evenly.
  • Cut the bacon into pieces that will just wrap once around each sausage. Depending on bacon thickness, cutting slices into quarters often works well.
  • Pour the 1/4 cup of maple syrup into a small bowl. You can either dip the bacon pieces in the syrup before wrapping or wrap first and brush the bacon with syrup. Secure the ends with a toothpick so the bacon stays in place while cooking. Repeat for all sausages.
  • Place all wrapped sausages on the prepared rack or pan. Sprinkle the tops with 2 tablespoons of coconut sugar.
  • Bake at 425°F for 10 minutes, then flip each smokie and sprinkle with the remaining 2 tablespoons of coconut sugar. Bake an additional 10 minutes, or until the bacon is crispy and caramelized.
  • Serve hot and enjoy—they tend to disappear fast!

Notes

Keto variation: substitute a sugar-free maple syrup and a granular monkfruit or erythritol-based brown sugar substitute. Air fryer: prepare the smokies the same way and air fry at 400°F for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway, until crisp to your liking.
