Magical Butterfly Birthday Party Ideas for Kids: Decor, Games & More

A Butterfly Birthday Party

We hosted a butterfly-themed birthday party at our home over the weekend, and it was so much fun. I worried about filling two hours, but a Justin Bieber dance-off and fresh cotton candy made the time fly by.
We picked butterflies even though it’s January — a choice that brightened everyone’s mood and gave us a little taste of spring. I love the orange and hot pink color combination; it felt cheerful and festive. Avery helped stamp the invitations and hand-delivered them to her friends.

The party table was simple and sugary — cupcakes, cotton candy, a candy bar for favors, and a crowd-pleasing party punch. The kids loved it.

I used my faux cake again — I’m a fan of a reusable “fake cake.” It’s made from styrofoam forms covered in fondant that my sister-in-law helped create. I decorate it with paper and ribbon to match the theme. It’s worked for holidays and parties before, and it saved time this time around too.

For the candy bar I chose sweets in pink and orange. I like shopping the bulk candy sections at local grocery stores so I can buy just the right amounts without overspending.

We picked up the following items for the candy display:
Macey’s:
– Big gumballs: orange, pink and white
– Sour grapefruit slices
Winco:
– Large gummy butterflies
– Candy necklaces
– Pink Hershey’s kisses (valentine’s edition)
– Pixie sticks
To tie the jars together, I added hot pink ribbon and a small butterfly embellishment. Grouped together the treats looked charming and cohesive.
For cupcakes, we used simple white cake with white frosting and added butterfly toppers for a pretty finishing touch.

For Christmas, Avery received a cotton candy maker from her grandmother, so we brought it out for the party. We held a dance-off while I spun cotton candy — the dancing kept the girls entertained and the best performers earned the first servings.

Imagine having a cotton candy machine at home as a child — it’s pure magic. The kids were thrilled.

We ran out of time to assemble butterfly wands, but I had one ready as an example for the girls to copy when they make theirs later.

The party was a big success. One of my favorite moments was right before guests arrived when Avery said, “I just want to make sure I give all my guests a warm welcome.” It made me laugh — she’s so thoughtful and cute at this age.
