Hello and happy Monday!

The weather here in Virginia has been wonderful recently — low eighties, low humidity, and bright sunshine. Those are the days I call “good photography days,” when the sun streams into the studio and highlights whatever I’m cooking or photographing.

This weekend the shakes didn’t stay on display long — they were devoured almost immediately.

You’re going to love these Healthy Vegan Chocolate Frostys. They’re made from whole food ingredients and naturally sweetened with banana and dates, with zero added refined sugar.

No drive-through required — all you need is frozen fruit, a blender, and plenty of cacao powder.

My Chocolate Frosty Era

Most of us went through a Chocolate Frosty phase as kids. I remember using wisdom teeth removal as an excuse to score a few Frostys from my parents — soft, cold, and easy to eat. While there are now variations like Vanilla Frosty, today we’re celebrating the classic chocolate version.

But this isn’t just a chocolate milkshake. It’s a refined-sugar-free treat that delivers protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs, all masked behind rich chocolate flavor.

What You Need to Make Healthy Vegan Chocolate Frosty

This recipe is loosely inspired by my tahini-date shake and uses simple, accessible ingredients:

  • Frozen ripe bananas (or substitute frozen cauliflower or berries if avoiding banana)
  • Raw cacao powder
  • Almond butter for creaminess
  • Hemp hearts (optional, for extra protein)
  • Unsweetened almond milk
  • Pre-steamed, frozen cauliflower (adds volume and creaminess)
  • Medjool dates for natural sweetness
  • Chocolate gems or chocolate chunks to boost flavor

Frozen banana and cauliflower add bulk and a creamy texture; almond butter makes the shake silky; dates and banana provide natural sweetness without added sugar.

I usually limit banana in my smoothies because I’m sensitive to raw banana, but in these Frostys the frozen banana works beautifully—adding sweetness, healthy fat, and body that keeps the Frosty thick and scoopable. If you don’t want banana, replace it with extra frozen cauliflower or berries and add an extra date if you need more sweetness.

Swaps and Substitutions

This shake is highly customizable so you can fine-tune texture and flavor:

  • For a thicker Frosty: add more frozen cauliflower or a few ice cubes.
  • For a thinner consistency: add more almond milk.
  • To increase sweetness: add another date.
  • To lower sugar: replace bananas with extra frozen cauliflower.

Start with less almond milk and fewer dates — you can always add more, but you can’t take them out once blended. For chocolate intensity, experiment with 2–3 tablespoons of raw cacao powder; 2 tablespoons is a good starting point. Adding a couple tablespoons of chocolate gems or chunks into the blend or as a topping enhances the chocolate-malt flavor many Frosty lovers crave.

How to Serve Healthy Vegan Chocolate Frosty

This Frosty works well as a dessert, an afternoon snack, or even a decadent breakfast. If you want more protein, add a scoop of your favorite chocolate protein powder. For an extra indulgent treat, top with coconut whipped cream and a few chocolate gems.

Depending on how thick you blend it, enjoy with a spoon or a straw. I usually spoon mine because I like the texture extra thick — the blender blades often stall before it’s completely smooth.

The recipe below serves two; halve it for one serving or make two and share.

Enjoy!
